Youth Star Cambodia is a Cambodian NGO whose aim is to give young people an opportunity to develop their civic skills by working as volunteers in underserved rural areas of Cambodia. Youth Star Cambodia’s aim is to build a just and peaceful nation through Citizen Service, Civic Leadership and Social Entrepreneurship.

Before being accepted into the program Youth Star candidates are assessed according to personal qualities such as flexibility and adaptability, sensitivity to others, the ability to work well in teams, and practical problem-solving skills. They are also assessed on their commitment to volunteering in a rural area without many amenities, and to continuous learning.
During their year-of-service, volunteers additionally receive on-site practical training in monitoring and evaluation, community mapping, facilitation skills, and report writing and supervision. Areas of specialized learning include community health, micro finance & micro enterprises, modern agriculture techniques, and sanitation. On a personal level, volunteers report becoming more confident, articulate and open to new ideas and experiences.

In conjunction with our two main messages at Youth Star, 2010 proved to be a successful year as we achieved our goals of having our Youth Star volunteers serve as Role Models and also practice Good Citizenship.
Youth Star recruits Cambodian university graduates for 12-18 months service in under-served rural communities. We train, coach and supervise volunteers during their year of service. The volunteers live and work in the communities and are accountable to them. The volunteers come together quarterly for reflection and further training.

There is much anecdotal evidence that Youth Volunteers are influencing youths to change to an unexpected degree.
Youth Star volunteers helped to mobilize 1,400 people in a sanitation project that focused on hand washing, and building and using locally made and affordable latrines.
Youth Star interns help to implement the One Laptop Per Child project in schools in Kratie and Prey Veng provinces.
