Agriculture Intern

Job title: Agriculture Intern
Responsible to: Community Partner and Youth Star Cambodia Program Officer
Purpose: The intern will work closely with the community partner to provide technical assistance to the community to increase agricultural productivity and food security.

Agriculture Responsibilities:

  • To provide information to local farmers about new agricultural methods and technology
  • To help farmers getting technical expertise when needed, and to get information on market prices for their crops
  • To introduce, train and motivate farmers and community members in new rice planting techniques, i.e. System of Rice Intensification (SRI), which is a method of increasing the yield of rice produced in farming, to to increase the productivity of their farms
  • To select and facilitate cooperation between young farmers, acting asĀ  role models, in order to share information innovative techniques and good practice, and to learn how to take part in wider community affairs
  • To facilitate training in, and encourage the production and use of organic fertilizer
  • To facilitate training and provide support in the correct use of chemical fertilizers, where organic fertilizer use is not possible or practical
  • To facilitate training on chicken raising techniques, frog raising techniques, fish raising techniques (or similar as appropriate for the area)
  • To provide practical training to young farmers in vegetable and mushroom growing, as well as nutrition

Other General Responsibilities:

  • To carry out initial community mapping identifying potential community resources within the first month of placement
  • To develop monthly work plans with local partner, monitor and evaluate ongoing project activities and ensure regular reporting
  • To coach weak students to help them to catch up in their studies, especially in Khmer language and Mathematics
  • To assist in the return to school of school drop outs
  • To develop a children's club and / or a youth club to promote good citizenship and involve children and young people in community development
  • To assist in the teaching of English to children and young people
  • To promote volunteerism among young people

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Associate or Bachelor degree in Agriculture, or Bachelor degree in a related field
  • Aged between 20 to 30
  • Ability to work effectively with a broad range of people, including children and young people
  • Willingness to make a minimum of 9 months commitment to rural communities.
