Education and Youth Development Intern

Job title: Education and Youth Development Intern
Responsible to: Community Partner and Youth Star Cambodia Program Officer
Purpose: The intern will work closely with the community partner to expand and improve education services to vulnerable children, and facilitate and support young people’s development as active citizens

Education Duties:

  • To work with local education officials to provide mentoring and coaching to vulnerable students to help them to catch up in their studies, especially in Khmer language and Mathematics
  • To provide substitute teaching when requested by the school or authority/partner
  • To promote the love of reading through reading clubs and to facilitate access to libraries.
  • To assist the school administration with school administration, planning, and monitoring teaching practice and student performance. And to demonstrate good practice.
  • To work closely with local authorities and families to keep children in school and bring school drop outs back to school.
  • To provide support to the local parents association
  • To help organize and facilitate children’s and youth clubs that promote good governance, good citizenship, and leadership through activities that benefit their community
  • To facilitate networking between youth groups
  • To facilitate basic life skills in children and youth clubs (i.e. to conduct or facilitate practical training in non-violence, safe migration, reproductive health & HIV/Aids, handicraft or vegetable gardening, sanitation and environment protection, promotion of the arts, research and write local stories etc..)
  • To assist and coach students who are preparing for high school and university entrance exams
  • To assist in the teaching of English to children and young people

Other General Responsibilities:

  • To carry out initial community mapping identifying potential community resources within the first month of placement
  • To develop monthly work plans with local partner, monitor and evaluate ongoing project activities and ensure regular reporting
  • To promote volunteerism among young people

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Bachelor degree in Education or related field
  • Aged between 20 to 30
  • Ability to work effectively with a broad range of people including children and young people
  • Willingness to make a minimum of 9 month commitment in rural communities
