Health Education Intern

Job title: Health Education Intern
Responsible to: Community Partner and Youth Star Cambodia Program Officer
Purpose: The intern will work closely with the community partner to improve access to information regarding health and understanding of health issues in the community

Health Education Duties:

  • To work with local authorities, resource people , and local organizations, to educate children and their parents on basic healthcare, hygiene and nutrition
  • To engage local authorities and young people in campaigns and activities that raise awareness and prevent diseases such as Dengue Fever, Malaria, Typhoid, and HIV/Aids.
  • To educate young people about the negative impact of alcohol or other substance abuse, such as glue sniffing
  • To engage local authorities and young people in promoting public awareness on health issues such as bird flu, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and HIV/Aids
  • To work with local health personnel to encourage pre and post natal care, and awareness amongst women to regularly check for breast lumps.
  • To assist local health officials to encourage people’s participation during vaccination and other health campaigns
  • To work closely with the commune health and social welfare officer to support early childhood education activities in the community
  • To facilitate mothers discussion groups on child care practices.

General Responsibilities:

  • To carry out initial community mapping identifying potential community resources within the first month of placement
  • To develop monthly work plans with local partner, monitor and evaluate ongoing project activities and ensure regular reporting
  • To coach weak students to help them catching up with their studies, especially Khmer language and Mathematics
  • To assist with the return to school of school drop outs
  • To develop a children's club and / or a youth club to promote good citizenship and involve children and young people in community development
  • To assist with the teaching of English to children and young people
  • To promote volunteerism amongst young people

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Bachelor degree in health, nutrition or other field of study.
  • Aged between 20 to 30
  • Ability to work effectively with a broad range of people, including children and young people
  • Willingness to make a minimum of 9 month commitment in rural communities
