Legal Education Intern

Job title: Legal Education Intern
Responsible to: Community Partner and Youth Star Cambodia Program Officer
Purpose: The intern will work closely with the community partner to disseminate information about Cambodian laws and to encourage people's participation in commune or village council activities

Legal Education Duties:

  • To help the commune council or village chief to disseminate information about Cambodian laws, including the land law, domestic violence law, etc...
  • To provide useful and relevant information to community members about changes to laws, for example the need to legally wear a helmet when driving a moto
  • To work closely with local authorities to disseminate information about people's responsibilities and rights as citizens
  • To encourage and facilitate community, and especially young people’s, participation in commune and village council activities and meetings
  • To help the village council or commune council to improve administrative systems and work practices
  • To strengthen communication and facilitation skills of commune councils or village committees
  • To help community members access information and resources to protect themselves from abusive practices (i.e. emergency hotline for safe migration, where to get help on land titling issues, or for domestic violence)

Other General Responsibilities:

  • To carry out initial community mapping identifying potential community resources within the first month of placement
  • To develop monthly work plans with local partner, monitor and evaluate ongoing project activities and ensure regular reporting
  • To coach weak students to help them catching up with their studies, especially Khmer language and Mathematics
  • To assist with the return to school of school drop outs
  • To develop a children's club and / or a youth club to promote good citizenship and involve children and young people in community development
  • To assist with the teaching of English to children and young people
  • To promote volunteerism among young people

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Bachelor degree in Law or related field
  • Aged between 20 to 30
  • Ability to work effectively a broad range or people including children and young people
  • Willingness to make a minimum of 9 months commitment to rural communities.
