2010 Achievements

In conjunction with our two main messages at Youth Star, 2010 proved to be a successful year as we achieved our goals of having our Youth Star volunteers serve as Role Models and also practice Good Citizenship.

Young Cambodians act on their idealism by engaging in service to their communities and country. Young people are inspired to become good citizens and become Cambodian's next generation of civic leaders and social entrepreneurs.

  • Volunteer Placements for two cohorts were conducted with a warm welcome of the  volunteers from the communities. 90% of those volunteers are still working well in their communities.
  • Two groups of volunteers were recruited (21 new), and another 58 volunteers are still working in the communities resulting in greater impact in communities.
  • Field supervisions were conducted nine times, which enabled the volunteers to feel close to the Program Officers and receive clear guidance to overcome the challenges in the communities (Group 9 to 14). There was a great collaboration between local partner and volunteers.
  • Neighboring communities value volunteerism and the impact of volunteers in communities. As a result six new communities applied for volunteers for the first time. They were all assessed and volunteers were placed in four of them with the assistance of our local partners.
  • Youth club and volunteers’ activities lead to an increasing volunteer spirit amongst young people in communities and many young people joined  community activities.
  • Using their hands-on experience from communities and transferable skills from the training provided at the end of their service, six out of seven volunteers from Kratie who finished their service got new jobs.
  • Seven new Hawaiian internships provided opportunities for seven more young Cambodians to get agricultural experience.
  • Volunteer satisfaction with their service experience resulted in 10 extensions of service contracts.

Innovative service programs built understanding and civic trust, transforming volunteers and the communities they serve.

  • We implemented innovative projects that empower communities and improve livelihoods. The community led Total Sanitation (CLTS) Project was completed with an increased number 122  latrines and safe drinking water.
  • Youth Star volunteering and local youth cooperation with the Local Authority resulted in 100% school registration in 17 communities. This Education campaign links to the national plan by the Ministry of Education.
  • Our private sector partnership with Pandaw Cruise led to an increased visibility and job opportunities for Youth Star volunteers.
  • Partnering with the Swimming Federation introduced Youth Star to new audiences and stake holders as we successfully contributed to the event organization.
  • Our participation in the Annual Career Forum resulted in approximately 500 applicants for a volunteer orientation day.
