Youth Star is a proud implementing partner of the OLPC initiative. Nicholas and Elaine Negroponte started a school in 2000 as part of an effort by Bernie Krisher to reach out to children in rural Cambodia. They brought laptop computers to the school as part of their efforts to bring opportunities for learning. The program was so successful that Nicholas was inspired to try to do the same for every child.

Over 520 laptops have been donated to schools and children in rural villages since, assisting in creating stimulating learning environments for rural children. The innovative lessons are used to promote creativity and critical thinking amongst students. Parents are also impressed with the initiative of laptops which benefits to their children's studies, and they are happy to participate and contribute to the operation.

Since its implementation in 2009, the number of dropout students decreased significantly, and 90 percent of student attend classes regularly. A school director said that the children paid more attention on their studies and they have improved with this new methodology. Most children preferred to be at class playing with the computers rather than going to field or playing, so that even during the school break many children were at school.

Progress is steady but slow due to the limited contact time students have on the computers and due to the limited teaching experience (and pedagogic skills) of our volunteers. But there is no doubt that the students are enthusiastic and enjoy learning through the laptops. We are trying to encourage the directors to allow students to take the computers home to practice, and we are exploring ways of giving our volunteers more teacher training.
